State generally reflects the reported activity location. A filing can contain multiple locations.
02 / READ THE SIGNAL

Useful context before conclusions

The atlas makes public reporting patterns easier to explore while keeping source limits visible.

01

Reporting intensity is not crime intensity.

SARs and STRs record suspicion reported by regulated entities. More volume can reflect a larger customer base, controls, sector concentration or filing practice.

02

Location means different things.

FinCEN generally locates reported activity, with fallback rules. FINTRAC locates the reporting entity. The maps are useful but not directly equivalent.

03

Totals are not always unique filings.

A U.S. SAR can include multiple locations, institution types and activity selections. “All” views are displayed counts, not a deduplicated caseload.

04

Local detail has explicit limits.

FinCEN derives county from reported ZIP. Canada maps only exact three-character FSAs; suppressed one- and two-character values are never spread across smaller areas.

Trace every layer to its origin

Public, reproducible sources. No proprietary risk labels and no individual SAR or STR records.
